The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon EmperorUpon the request of some friends, I've finally decided to write something about this movie. It is painful enough to have seen it, even more so to have to remember all the details and write about it, I assure you.
Before I start going into details, I must say that this movie is wrong. Plain wrong, from the very beginning to the end. It might be amusing to foreigners (by foreigners I mean people from the western part of the world), or even kids, but to me, it's everything but.
Let's look at the list of things that's wrong about this movie.
The Setting
If you remember the first Mummy, the setting was in Egypt, and everything was as it should be. War, deserts, camels, pyramids, slavery... And the main reason of all these elements being well-placed is because it's "The Mummy", for crying out loud, we all know mummies generally come from Egypt, 'cause mummification of the pharoahs is what ancient Egypt was famous for. So when I first saw the words "Tomb of the Dragon Emperor", I knew they had gone down a wrong direction, simply because there weren't mummies in China. The only scary thing they have there are Jiang Shi, which looks like this:
The Story
I have to be honest with you. The whole digging up mummies and resurrecting them by accident thing is getting old. In the first movie, Imhotep was resurrected because Evelyn read that bloody book of death or whatever it was called. Fine, I could live with that. In The Mummy Returns, someone resurrected Imhotep for power, and even that is ok for me, but it already was some kind of repetition. Now, Alex had incidentally ditch college, go all the way to China to dig out Emperor Han (Emperor Han? I don't remember there being an Emperor Han who wanted to conquer the whole China and built the Great Wall...) and resurrected him by accident. In fact it could've been another person that they accidentally resurrect, but then incidentally the emperor that they thought was the emperor was a decoy, and the person they resurrected turned out to be the real emperor. How convenient. Too conincidental for my taste, really. I'd rather see someone read from Zi Yuan's book of spells and accidentally resurrected Han.
Brendan Fraser/Rick O'Connell
Don't get me wrong, I like this guy. He's funny, at the very least. However, it is a bit hard to accept that he's still behaving like some 20-year-old when his son is already about 20 years of age. In this movie I really couldn't feel the connection between him and Alex (Luke Ford). It felt as if the two of them were totally unrelated strangers, and when they're having a fight, it looked (relatively) more like 2 brothers quarrelling rather than father and son. I know that they are not close, but blood is thicker than water, and I failed to see that bond of blood between them. Want an example of believable father-and-son relationship? Maria Bello/Evelyn O'Connell
I have nothing against Maria Bello's acting. However, Rachel Weisz seemed to have more charm and life in her when she's acting as Evelyn. Maria Bello does have her own strengths, but at the end of the day, she's still no Rachel Weisz.
Luke Ford/Alex O'Connell A lot could change in so many years, and Alex O'Connell is no longer the same boy we knew from The Mummy Returns. He's supposed to be a rebellious young man with the kind of charm his father once possessed. However, in this movie I failed to see his charm or his skills or even his rebelliousness. He just seems so... old.
Russell Wong/General Guo Ming
He's good looking and has great physiques fit to be a general alongside one of the greatest emperors the world has ever seen. Ancient chinese, he's everything but. And speaking of chinese, this guy is what we call "banana". Yellow on the outside, white on the inside. He can't even speak Mandarin properly, for God's sakes.
Jet Li/Emperor Han Jet Li is one of the actors that I respect most. We all remember "Fearless" and "Lethal Weapon 4". However, being the emperor here, Jet Li is most unsuitable. Firstly it's his built. He's fairly short, maybe average Asian height, but do they have to put him beside Russell Wong so often? It makes him look like Frodo in the presence of Gandalf! Then there's his looks. Jet Li has that baby-face that makes him look very young. Somehow, the combination of his looks and his (relative) size failed to deliver that great conquerer's image to the big screen. However he does look better with that moustache though. Wonder why they removed it when he was resurrected.
Michelle Yeoh/Zi Yuan All I can say is that I don't enjoy seeing old ladies dressed up in sexy, revealing clothes. Her Mandarin isn't that good either.
Isabella Leong/Lin For a person who had lived for 2000 years, she does seem very immature and emotional. Very very unconvincing. Besides, she calls Michelle Yeoh "Mu Qin" (mother, in Mandarin), but till the very end, when Michelle Yeoh was murdered, she yelled, "MOTHER!!!" So the lesson here is, the mother tongue of non-English-speaking people are actually English.
Footballer Yetis I can accept that the Yetis came out of their hiding to help. But kicking that army guy over the arch and making that "victory" move? That's probably pushing it too far.
The Death of Rick O'Connell We all still remember that Evelyn was resurrected from her death in The Mummy Returns. But now Rick goes through the same thing? This movie has bored me from the beginning, and the part where Rick took the stab for his son, I kind of wished that he'd die for real. At least it would be surprising, and their fight with the emperor would've been more personal than ever. But well, he got resurrected, big surprise.
I See Dead People
Do you still remember Stephen Sommers' Van Helsing, where Kate Beckinsale died and her face appeared in the sky at the end? It took a massive blow of criticism, that scene. Obviously Rob Cohen had not learned the lesson, and allowed Russell Wong's and Michelle Yeoh's faces appear in the sand in the end. LAME. Besides, there wasn't much character development for Russell and Michelle's character to begin with, why are they suddenly so important that they get to show their faces in the blown sand in the end?
3-Headed Dragon
Ok, so Jet Li is a shape-shifter, and changing into a dragon does make sense since it is regarded as one of the most mysterious and powerful and divine creatures in Chinese culture. But the problem is, there are no 3-headed dragons in Chinese culture. Besides, it looked nothing like a Chinese dragon, which should look like the dragon we see in D-Wars. Besides, whats that hairy creature he morphed into in the final battle? I thought it was a Qi Lin, but it looked nothing like it. Movie makers, please, DO MORE RESEARCH!
Others There are so many other things that I find wrong in this movie, but I'm too lazy to elaborate already, so I'm going to just briefly go through them. The statue of the emperor - no such thing in Chinese history. Ever. John Hannah isn't funny anymore. The movie's historically incorrect. Anthony Wong was a good antagonist but he posed too little threat. "Why am I laughing?" Well, I don't know... why are you laughing? It's not even funny.
In conclusion, if you're 12, you'll probably enjoy this movie. If you're not, make sure you only watch it when you really have nothing better to do.

One More DayDear Bee,
It's been hard, the past few hours when I've been uploading these songs to the Mickey MP3 Player and posting the lyrics for you on this blog... My body's doing all the work, but my heart's been missing you so damn much it hurts. I really do wish there would've been one more day for us to be together, without phone calls, no TV, no nothing, just the two of us. Guess I didn't realize that time had been flying and now it's time to say goodbye. Somehow "I miss you" simply couldn't explain how I feel right now... So I guess I'll just have to let you listen to the songs yourself. Anyways, I hope we both do well in our internship, and I hope you'd have a good time in Korea. A random entry for some not-so-random thoughtsSomething got me wondering lately.
What happens when you know for sure that you have the determination to do something good, but everyone around you, including the one who’s closest to you, doubts that you would? I mean, how many people in this world have the strength to still do good just for the sake of doing good when everyone else already has this preconception that he/she wouldn’t? And the worst part is, even the one person that you trust would have faith in you, joins the others in bashing you. Would you still hold that faith in you and say to yourself that no matter how much everyone doubts you, you’d still go on?
I guess that separates us normal people from true heroes. Take Spidey for example. All he did was living up to the great power he was given: taking up a great responsibility, saving lives. Well what happened to him? He got fired from his delivery job, the love of his life thinks of him as an empty seat, the press says he’s a criminal, and most of all, his best friend thinks he’s a murderer. Even heroes have their breaking points, and Peter Parker almost reached that point. He gave up being Spiderman and tried to live a normal life. Everything went great for him, I guess, but in the end he realizes that sometimes to do what’s right, we would have to give up the things that we want the most, even our dreams. Wow.
Speaking of dreams, I guess I wouldn’t be too far from the truth when I say that it would be most guys’ dreams to be able to have a relationship with any girl that attracts them. Seriously, which straight guy wouldn’t want that? It’s human nature, no? If you’re one of the few straight guys in this world who doesn’t think so, or thinks that when you’ve found that one person that you really want to be with and that would be enough, then welcome to the club. I believed (and I still do, but don’t know how long more) that I have the ability to be that hero who would give up his dreams to do what’s right. But let’s face it, the world is skeptical, and Spidey is fictional, after all.
Most of the time I guess confidence is the main driving force that gives me the ability to achieve things. Somehow I realized that confidence alone isn’t enough. You need motivation. Would Peter have picked up his Spidey suit once again if Aunt May hadn’t motivated him? If everyone in the city believes the press and thinks of Spidey as a criminal, would he have given up his dreams once again just to save the day? If everyone around you doubts you, would you still be determined to be that hero that you believed you would be? If you still have faith, it’s probably a good thing but everyone might still not acknowledge your deeds. Worst still, they might have prejudice against you, or your kind, and think that you’re probably doing good just for show, and that you’re still bad in nature. Wouldn’t that make you want to start doing bad things just so that you’re not being thought of as or called something you don’t deserve?
Sometimes it takes only one person to motivate you to do what’s right. When MJ said, “Go get’em, Tiger.” Peter was immediately transformed into an ultra crime fighting machine that dedicates his life to ridding planet earth, and subsequently other planets, of crimes. Just that one phrase of acknowledgment can give a person the power to go a long way. Just a word of support can give life to a near-dead person. Perhaps we’re all alive because we’re motivated by the knowledge that we’ll experience something new everyday, no?
I remembered the impact of MJ’s last dialogue in Spiderman 2 had on me, though it was meant to create an impact on Peter. I put myself in Peter’s shoes and thought that those words felt like rain in the middle of the drought. But well, I sure ain’t getting any rain lately. Perhaps getting some sleep would make me feel better about being that hero I’ve always wanted to be.

TransformersAlright, Transformers, a movie that most people (who had a childhood) had been anticipating, had finally come to the big screens. To tell you the truth, I was pretty excited as well. Ever since I was a kid, I've always loved robots. Automatrons, if you wish that I'd be more specific, since I'm not really interested in those machines that build your Perodua Kancil, even though those things are so happened to be termed "robots" as well. Transformers has been around for a long, long time (for how long, I don't know, because I'm lazy to do research on that). It's always been a classic, and now it's REAL! Who wouldn't be excited about it, right?
Okay. Let's go to the reviews. Sorry, the most I can tell you about the story is that the Autobots and the Decepticons fought for some cube thing, and humans were caught in the middle. Nothing much to expect, really. In terms of story, it's pretty much the same, and you know that in order to be entertained, you gotta just let go of the storyline, and focus on the effects and fighting scenes. No, don't argue with me. If you want excellent story telling, go watch some other movie.
I watched Transformers in IMAX. The screen was kind of too big, really, and it's quite hard to catch the actions from time to time, and my eyes had to take some time to adapt to it. However, once you get used to it, it's fine. The story started pretty quickly, and the heroes of the story were almost immediately pulled into the special world from the ordinary world (don't mind me, I'm just kind of practising the use of some so-called screen-writing jargons that I learnt in class). Well, I like it this way, because it's an action-packed movie, we don't want to waste time on too much introduction.
Then, with some slight introduction of the heroes, namely Sam and Mikaela (not sure if I spelt it right), all the actions started and didn't stop till the very end.
As for the robot designs, I would say that they're great, even though they do take quite a long time to fully transform, which, in the real world, it makes more sense, so I find it acceptable. The only thing that disappointed me (only at a microscopic scale, of course), is that we don't really get to see clearly how they transform, and which part of the vehicle becomes which part of the robot. Well, let's hope they would consider showing a slow-mo animation of the transformation as an extra feature in the DVD.
There are a few points here that I think are really good for the movie:
1. Megatron doesn't transform into a miniature gun that his minions could use as a weapon.
2. Bumble bee is a Camaro!
3. Optimus Prime is like, a gazillion times cooler than he was before! He wrestles, he uses a blade, and he kills! Kick ass!
4. There are some comical scenes, which makes the movie more watchable.
5. The movements of the robots are really fast and flexible, which implies they are organisms, not mere machines.
6. One of the autobots was killed brutally, and this makes the movie more realistic in the sense that good guys sometimes die as well. Also, let's face it, it's not that transformer cartoon you see some 20 years ago anymore. Face it, it's real now, and Megatron will have no hesitation in exterminating every single last one of the Autobots.
I think the only bad thing about this movie was the ending, where Optimus Prime actually did a short narration and "closing statement", which I think is pretty lame. Other than that, I can't say I have anymore complaint about this movie. It retains the balance between the lighter scenes and the darker parts of the story, and most of all, the CG were excellently executed. It's definitely a movie that you can watch over and over again (even Spiderman, or Batman Begins, or X-men are not fascinating enough to make you consider watching them again sometimes). You'd only disagree with me if you happen to fall into any of these two categories:
1. You're 35 years old and above.
2. You hate movies.
