TransformersAlright, Transformers, a movie that most people (who had a childhood) had been anticipating, had finally come to the big screens. To tell you the truth, I was pretty excited as well. Ever since I was a kid, I've always loved robots. Automatrons, if you wish that I'd be more specific, since I'm not really interested in those machines that build your Perodua Kancil, even though those things are so happened to be termed "robots" as well. Transformers has been around for a long, long time (for how long, I don't know, because I'm lazy to do research on that). It's always been a classic, and now it's REAL! Who wouldn't be excited about it, right?
Okay. Let's go to the reviews. Sorry, the most I can tell you about the story is that the Autobots and the Decepticons fought for some cube thing, and humans were caught in the middle. Nothing much to expect, really. In terms of story, it's pretty much the same, and you know that in order to be entertained, you gotta just let go of the storyline, and focus on the effects and fighting scenes. No, don't argue with me. If you want excellent story telling, go watch some other movie.
I watched Transformers in IMAX. The screen was kind of too big, really, and it's quite hard to catch the actions from time to time, and my eyes had to take some time to adapt to it. However, once you get used to it, it's fine. The story started pretty quickly, and the heroes of the story were almost immediately pulled into the special world from the ordinary world (don't mind me, I'm just kind of practising the use of some so-called screen-writing jargons that I learnt in class). Well, I like it this way, because it's an action-packed movie, we don't want to waste time on too much introduction.
Then, with some slight introduction of the heroes, namely Sam and Mikaela (not sure if I spelt it right), all the actions started and didn't stop till the very end.
As for the robot designs, I would say that they're great, even though they do take quite a long time to fully transform, which, in the real world, it makes more sense, so I find it acceptable. The only thing that disappointed me (only at a microscopic scale, of course), is that we don't really get to see clearly how they transform, and which part of the vehicle becomes which part of the robot. Well, let's hope they would consider showing a slow-mo animation of the transformation as an extra feature in the DVD.
There are a few points here that I think are really good for the movie:
1. Megatron doesn't transform into a miniature gun that his minions could use as a weapon.
2. Bumble bee is a Camaro!
3. Optimus Prime is like, a gazillion times cooler than he was before! He wrestles, he uses a blade, and he kills! Kick ass!
4. There are some comical scenes, which makes the movie more watchable.
5. The movements of the robots are really fast and flexible, which implies they are organisms, not mere machines.
6. One of the autobots was killed brutally, and this makes the movie more realistic in the sense that good guys sometimes die as well. Also, let's face it, it's not that transformer cartoon you see some 20 years ago anymore. Face it, it's real now, and Megatron will have no hesitation in exterminating every single last one of the Autobots.
I think the only bad thing about this movie was the ending, where Optimus Prime actually did a short narration and "closing statement", which I think is pretty lame. Other than that, I can't say I have anymore complaint about this movie. It retains the balance between the lighter scenes and the darker parts of the story, and most of all, the CG were excellently executed. It's definitely a movie that you can watch over and over again (even Spiderman, or Batman Begins, or X-men are not fascinating enough to make you consider watching them again sometimes). You'd only disagree with me if you happen to fall into any of these two categories:
1. You're 35 years old and above.
2. You hate movies.
